Smartphone shipments experienced a roughly 10% decline in the first quarter of 2024, attributed to heightened competition among Android smartphone manufacturers vying for dominance, as indicated by data from research firm IDC released on Sunday.
Global smartphone shipments, however, saw a 7.8% increase, reaching 289.4 million units from January to March. Samsung (005930.KS), with a 20.8% market share, secured the top position in the phone market, surpassing Apple.
Apple's substantial sales decline follows a robust performance in the December quarter, during which it claimed the title of the world's leading phone maker, overtaking Samsung. However, Apple has now slipped to second place with a market share of 17.3%, while Chinese brands like Huawei are gaining ground.
Xiaomi, a prominent Chinese smartphone manufacturer, held the third position with a market share of 14.1% in the first quarter.
Samsung, based in South Korea, launched its latest flagship smartphone lineup, the Galaxy S24 series, at the start of the year and shipped over 60 million phones during the period.
